There are not only males and females in the world, diverse has become a legal gender option in Germany

Description:My first thought after took a quick-reading on the heading was, "what the hell? Why does everything in the world become such complicated? A person's gender is naturally occurring, if a person desires to change the sex, the new gender is assigned after a series of operations. I made a big mistake indeed!

"Germany adopts intersex identity into law", this is a news headline from BBC. My first thought after took a quick-reading on the heading was, "what the hell? Why does everything in the world become such complicated? A person's gender is naturally occurring, if a person desires to change the sex, the new gender is assigned after a series of operations. What if the series of operations haven't been entirely completed, but the appearance is changed to the opposite sex, should the person keep the natural born gender or the person can already be categorised into a new gender? Although this is a difficult question, and there is no any unique answer that can be widely accepted over the world, should Germany create a third sex identity named 'diverse' legally for the person in the midway of their transgender operations?" I had this thought and made a big mistake, because I confused the intersex with transgender.

What's transgender?

"Transgender people are sometimes called transsexual if they desire medical assistance to transition from one sex to another." wiki

What's intersex?

" 'Intersex' is a general term used for a variety of conditions in which a person is born with a reproductive or sexual anatomy that doesn’t seem to fit the typical definitions of female or male. For example, a person might be born appearing to be female on the outside, but having mostly male-typical anatomy on the inside. Or a person may be born with genitals that seem to be in-between the usual male and female types—for example, a girl may be born with a noticeably large clitoris, or lacking a vaginal opening, or a boy may be born with a notably small penis, or with a scrotum that is divided so that it has formed more like labia. Or a person may be born with mosaic genetics, so that some of her cells have XX chromosomes and some of them have XY." isna.org

What's the main difference between Transgender and Intersex?

According to the above definitions, transgender is a person who desires to change the sex for a certain reasons; intersex is a person's natural-born gender doesn't fit neither male nor female category.

What Does Germany Do?

Germany now offers a third gender option for intersex people legal identify themselves.

"People who do not fit the biological definition of male or female can now choose the category "diverse" on official documents.

Those choosing the option will need a doctor's certificate to register." bbc.com

Other countries also passed laws to help identify intersex people. Germany has made a great progress surely.

I wonder, can Intersex people choose their genders as male (if the person looks like a male) or female (if the person looks like a female) or diverse (the person would like to identify oneself in this way with doctor's certificate)?

If yes, an intersex person can have at least 2, maximum 3 gender options, (1). either Male or Diverse; (2) either Female or Diverse; (3) either one of Male or Female or Diverse(if a person looks like both male and female).

Identifying a gender isn't easy in this sort of situations. Besides offering them one more option, is there any other methods to solve this kind of problems?

I found this video for you all to have more understanding about intersex:

Intersex People and the Physics of Judgment

What is intersex, is it the same as being transgender, and how are intersex people treated around the world?  1-2% of the population is intersex, but few can name a personal friend who is open about this identity.

There is a tremendous amount of shame around being intersex, as shown by the very few intersex people who have "come out." The discussion on what it's like to be diagnosed, what it's like to date and tell people about being intersex, and some ways to own your medical care and make sure that you get the help you need is important. 1-2% of the US population is intersex, yet few can name a personal friend that is open about this identity. Cecelia is the CEO of Bird Meets Bee, helping people find egg donors, sperm donors, and surrogates. Entrepreneur, songwriter, and traveler. Intersex advocate.

Related book of this topic:

When sociologist Georgiann Davis was a teenager, her doctors discovered that she possessed XY chromosomes, marking her as intersex. Rather than share this information with her, they withheld the diagnosis in order to “protect” the development of her gender identity; it was years before Davis would see her own medical records as an adult and learn the truth. Davis’ experience is not unusual. Many intersex people feel isolated from one another and violated by medical practices that support conventional notions of the male/female sex binary which have historically led to secrecy and shame about being intersex. Yet, the rise of intersex activism and visibility in the US has called into question the practice of classifying intersex as an abnormality, rather than as a mere biological variation. This shift in thinking has the potential to transform entrenched intersex medical treatment.
